Co-op Pets Food Critique: Meet Zeus!

By Dylan Haas, Boise Co-op Guy in the Aisle

Let’s face it, these days if you care an iota for your four-legged family friend – be they of the feline or canine variety – you go out of your way to provide them with as healthy a diet as possible. Heck, many of our family pets eat a consistently healthier diet than we do! Consequently, we here at the Co-op strive to provide you, our pet-loving clientele, with a thorough and robust a selection of high-quality, healthy and nutrient-rich cat and dog foods. Take a stroll down Aisle Four and be wowed by what you see – short of a specialty animal food store or high-end veterinarian clinic, you’ll be hard pressed to find a similarly thorough selection of cat and dog foods anywhere.

And if you’re truly a pet person,  you know how finicky these four legged friends can be about what goes into their diets – especially when it comes to food we WANT them to ingest. So, in an effort to present what we have available in the Co-op pet food arena, we are embarking upon a monthly segment we like to call "Co-op Pets Food Critique"  in which we will highlight the dietary habits of our own beloved pets.

This month we introduce Zeus, the four-legged housemate and feline confidante of our very own marketing director Robin Z. These days, young Zeus is eating a steady diet of Natura’s Innova brand wet and dry cat foods. It is no secret that Innova foods are some of the highest quality available for Zeus, or any other pets out there. Both wet and dry varieties provide a healthy balance of fats and proteins in a relatively higher caloric serving size – which translates into a healthier, happier Zeus.

As with all cat foods, the canned Innova varieties are superior to dry foods, as they are in general richer in nutrients and, obviously, contain a greater amount of water than their dry counterparts. But, for a mighty cat on the go, sometimes popping in for a quick bite of the dry food offering that’s been waiting in the bowl all afternoon is easier – and more appetizing – than pecking at the lump of perishable wet food that was deposited from the can sometime earlier in the day. Thus Robin provides Zeus with dry as well as wet food options from Innova.
Fortunately for Zeus, the Innova brand dry foods are similarly superior to, or are at least at the upper echelon of, the dry foods available to the four legged creatures of today. Packed with an even greater supply of calories per serving than the wet foods – which translates into strong, energetic pets – the Innova dry foods manage to maintain a similar balance of proteins and fats while maintaining a relatively low carbohydrate count.

As all conscientious cat mommies and daddies do, Robin keeps an eye on the phosphorous levels contained within the foods she gives her mighty Zeus – which again makes Zeus’ preference for Innova surreptitious, as the Natura people are extremely conscientious about maintaining relatively low phosphorous levels in their foods. This is good news for all the kitties out there with potentially weak or weakening kidneys, or just for those interested in maintaining the longevity of the kidneys that work just fine! Zeus may not realize it’s more than just a scrumptious kitty-meal – but Robin knows the health benefits she’s providing her little buddy, and so will you!
